The purpose of idents is to give audiences an idea of what the channel is about and what type of programs will be on that certain channel. Also idents are important because it represents the channel therefore the ident has to be interesting and attract an audience so more people will watch the programs on the channel, this will then gain more viewers for that specific channel. There is six design features which make an ident which is 'Density of information', 'Composition', 'Space and time', 'Tempo', 'Interaction with viewers' and 'Information Vs entertainment '. All of these six design features make an ident and make it interesting. Therefore all of these design features are seen in every ident this is to attract more viewers.
Film Ident: Gun Shooting:
The 'tempo' in the 'Film4' ident changes throughout, as soon as the female on the left hits the bottle with the gun's buttle the tempo of the music then changes dramatically and at the same time the Film4 logo appears. This could suggest that Film4 is a dramatic channel which surprises their audience/viewers. Therefore Film4 have done this so Film4 appears/sounds more appealing this is done by the tempo changing which will make the ident and the channel seem more appealing if the music changes, which will attract the audience's attention more. Whereas in different Film4 idents , each ident displays different genres of films which links back to what Film4 is about. And Film4 is about show a range of different genres of films which appeals to a wide range of audiences. So in this Film4 ident the film displayed is an action film. Therefore this means that Film4 show action films to the audience to watch.
The 'composition' of the logo of, 'Film4' appears. It then appears slowly and makes an impact on the audience this is because its draws the viewer's attention of what is appearing on the screen which in this case is the Film4 logo. This then shows to the viewers what the channel is about. (This channel contains a range of different films for all ages). Therefore Film4 have used this in their ident to show the audience clearly of what the channel is called which in this case is, 'Film4'. Therefore the markers of Film4 wanted to display their logo so the audience know and remember what channel they are watching. The logo also appears slowly so the audience have a long amount of time to see the Film4 logo/ to see what the channel is called.
The design feature, 'space and time' is shown in this ident as the audience can clearly see the location of the ident. The location is an abandoned area .(Maybe with a low population) this then shows it is reality/set in the real world; this is because two people are using guns without any people shown within the area telling the male and female they did not feel comfortable using guns in this location. Overall Film4 have done this because they wanted to create a realistic environment to show to the audience that Film4 is serious but can dramatically change by surprising their audience.

This Film4 ident is an example of all the design features. This is because it has a high density of information and a large amount of footage. And the narrator begins speaking when the logo of, 'Film4' appears. Therefore Film4 ident is doing this because the density of footage and information are equal which suggests that the channel wants to keep the audience interested so the viewers are still interested in the channel. Also in the centre of the logo the male and female remain this shows that both genders (all people), are always the certain of Film4, therefore Film4 have done this because Film4 are symbolic because their audience are the certain of all their attention and the audience are as important as the films they produce on the channel.
The type of design feature here, 'interaction with viewers' is clearly shown here because the narrator is presenting the information by speaking what will be next up on the channel. And the information is spoken/presented in a formal way because no slang is used but the ident is presented to be interesting. Therefore Film4 have used this type of design feature because they want to be appeal to all ages, (this is because Film4 presents films suitable for all ages at a range of different times of the day). So Film4's narrator has to be clearly heard so the audience fully understand what will be on the channel next or coming up later on the channel.
This type of display feature, 'Information VS Entertainment', is clearly shown in this ident. This is due to the fact that Film4 clearly state information of what is coming up next in the channel and what it contains, (which in this case is strong language). But the Film4 ident shows entertainment such as a male and a female shooting glass bottles while using a gun. Which some people may find appealing and interesting. Therefore Film4 have done this to appeal to many people by using a dramatic scene, which in this case is destroying glass bottles using a gun. Therefore Film4 are trying to be appealing and interesting to the audience so then Film4 becomes more of an interesting channel.
ITV2 Ident: Airport Trolleys :
The ident for, 'ITV 2 Airport Trolleys' has a length of 23 seconds, and the 'density' of information is high as the narrator begins speaking with information at 9 seconds into the ident. (Overall the narrator supplies information for 14 seconds). Therefore this shows the narrator for ITV 2 gives the audience information of what programme is coming and next and what it is about. This is key that there is some density of information in the ident as the audience will want to know what programme will be appearing next and what it will be about. And the ITV 2 Airport Trolley has this because it has a lot of information in the ident. For example the narrator begins speaking at 9 seconds so the audience can watch some of the ident and see the logo of the channel this is so audience know what channel they are watching and what it may be about. Also the target audience for density is 20-40 year olds this is because this certain audience will wish to know what programme is appearing next and what it will be about.
This ident also contains 'composition' such as the logo of the channel, which appears at 4 seconds and disappears at 11 seconds into the ident. The logo of the channel is very important because it is adverting the channel and represents the channel. For example the ident appears slowly and is clear to the viewers this is important because the audience's will need to know what channel they are watching and the channel will want to display their logo which is eye catching so the channel appears appealing. Therefore the target audience for the composition on this ident is 20-30 year olds this is because the logo of the channel appears slowly then disappears so this will appeal to this certain target audience because people aged 20-30 will not be interested in a logo that is over powering and contains to much colour, so the ident wanted a logo that did not contain to much colour because this may be seen as childish so the channel chose only to use one colour in the logo which is red, and red symbolic for love which may suggest that the audience will love ITV 2 and the programmes they show/air.
The 'tempo' of the ITV 2 ident is very upbeat and positive this then suggests that this channel is fun, positive, update and youthful. For example the music links to the characters in the ident as the people in the ident are young and their facial expressions are positive this then suggests that ITV 2 is a positive and young/youthful channel to watch. Therefore the target audience for the tempo will be 16-25 year olds this is because the music is update and positive which will appeal to many teenagers and adults because this age group enjoy music which is update and the age grup enjoy to listen to music which is fun to listen to.
Also the ITV 2 ident 'space and time' is set in reality and is relatable because the character in the ident are in a airport which suggests they are going on a holiday and the costume of the characters then suggest the characters are going on a summer holiday because they are wearing shorts and colourful t-shirts which is worn in the season of summer. For example it is set in reality because the characters are doing something which many people experience,(in an airport going on holiday). Therefore ITV 2 are trying to be relatable to their audience so their audience can relate to ITV 2 in a positive way. Also the target audience for this would be 18-30 year olds because that is around the age of the character in the ident therefore ITV 2 are trying to appeal to 18-30 year olds.
And in the ITV 2 ident the 'entertainment Vs information' design feature in this case is this entertainment is due to the fact that the audience can watch this ident without feeling uninterested and can watch the ident and fully enjoy it. For example the audience see young people enjoying themselves while riding airport trolleys. So this shows to the audience that they will enjoy watching this ident to see what will happen to the characters in the ident. Therefore the target audience for this ident is 18-30 year olds this is because stereotypes for this age group is this age group go out on holidays during summer to enjoy themselves and 18-30 year olds may relate to this because they may had fun in an airport and maybe involving airport trolleys. (Similar to the ones in this certain ident).
In this ident the design feature 'interaction with viewers' is shown and spoken in an informal way this is because the narrator is speaking in a pleasant way but as if he is having an conversation with someone but in this case the narrator is having a conversation with the viewers. Therefore the narrator speaking as if he is having a conversation then makes the audience relate to the narrator and the channel more because it will make the audience feel calm and relaxed if they feel they are being spoken to in a pleasant and in a calm/relaxed manner. For example the narrator say's, "What I am trying to say is", this shows the narrator is explaining himself to make it clear what he is saying and he is speaking in a informal way which is more calm for the audience. Therefore the target audience for this design feature is 16-25 year olds this is due to that fact that this age group may feel they don't want to be spoken to in a formal way therefore this target audience will want to be spoken to in a calm and informal way as if someone was just speaking to the audience in an relaxed environment and this is what the narrator does.
BBC 4 ident: Current Miscellaneous Presentation:
The design feature of 'density' for the ident for 'BBC 4: Current Miscellaneous Presentation' has a high density this is due the fact that the length of the ident is 01:02. But the narrator gives little information but the presentation advertises BBC 4 in a positive and series way. For example the density of the narrator giving information is low because in the begging the narrator says, "Everything to look forward to on BBC 4", this shows the narrator lets the presentation speak for BBC 4 because the ident has a long length and therefore a long length of information, so a high level of density of information. Therefore the target audience for this design feature is 25-50 year olds this is because this audience will be interested on what the channel has to offer and what type of programmes is shown on this certain channel, BBC 4.
Also the design feature of 'composition' is shown though out this ident this is due to the fact the logo of BBC 4 is shown though out the ident. For example the logo is shown throughout the ident so the audience clearly know what channel they are watching, but the logo of the channel is plain this is because the audience will not want an over powering logo as it will not appeal to them/appeal to their age group. Therefore the target audience for this design feature is 25-50 year olds this is due to the fact that this audience will not be interested in bright and colourful logo and this will not appeal to their personal taste and if the BBC 4 logo was bright and colourful this may be seen as childish which is the opposite to the BBC 4 channel. Also this ident shows BBC 4 is a serious channel this is because it displays a wide range of information such as documentaty which is true stories which could be emotion to watch, so this shows that BBC 4 is a seirous channel as it shows informtion to the audience will is either true or could be emotionall for the viewers to watch. For example in the ident the audience is a nurse, (in an black and white film) this shows that BBC 4 is a seirous channel as nurses/doctors have to save lives or go though sutiuations which could be life threating for the patients during that perdod of time also the fact that the documentaty is in black and white shows that the film footage is old/historical.
The design feature 'tempo' begins loud in the BBC 4 ident, this is so it grabs the audience's attention so that they watch the BBC 4 ident/watch BBC 4. The tempo throughout the ident is then positive and uplifting. For example the ident begins loud this is because BBC 4 will want viewers to watch the ident which may lead to them watching BBC 4. The target audience for this design feature is 25-40 year olds this is because the tempo/music will appeal to this certain age group because it is positive but not loud and overpowering.
Also the design feature 'space and time' is shown in this ident to be set because it is set in reality. But some of the ident is set in the past this is because BBC 4 shows historical programmes and serious programmes. For example the audience see people walking down the street, which is relatable because it is set in reality. Overall the target audience for this certain design feature is 30-50 year olds this is because BBC Four show historical programs, which may appeal to 30-50 years also BBC Four, is serious which will appeal to this age group.
The design feature 'entertainment vs information' is clearly shown in this BBC Four ident this is because this ident contains a lot of information and historical images/information which then shows it is serious and that BBC 4 supplies a lot of information for the audience. For example the audience see a black and white image of a nurse this then suggests BBC Four supplies audience's with historical information of the past. Therefore the target audience for this design feature is 25-50 year olds because it contains a lot of information which will appeal to this certain target audience/age group.
Also the design feature 'interaction viewers' is presented and spoken in a formal and serious way this is due to the fact that BBC Four is a formal and serious channel that presents programmes that are serious, factual and historical. For example the audience see characters talking in a formal manner and there is images which appear to be old/historical which then suggests that BBC Four is serious. Therefore the target audience for this design feature is 25-50 year olds because this age group will not approve of slang being spoken because this target will then find the channel unappealing and may find it is not suitable for their age group. (Slang is more stereotyped for the young generation not for the older generation).
ITV Ident: Ballerinas:
The design feature 'density of information' is show clearly in this ITV ident because the narrator speaks for the whole of the ident which shows it has a high density of information but the length of the ident is short this is because it is 15 seconds long. For example the narrator begins speaking as soon as the ident begins. Therefore the target audience for this design feature is 18-30 year olds this is because this age group will want to know what programme is appearing next and detail about it but they will not want the ident to be to long.
Also the design feature 'composition' is shown clearly this is because the logo is on the screen for the whole duration of the ident. For example the ident is on the left hand side of the screen this is so the audience can watch the characters in the ident but still clearly see the logo of the channel clearly. Therefore the target audience for this design feature 20-30 this is due to the fact is that this age group will want to know what channel they are watching but still be able to watch the ident without any problems. Whereas other idents are not like this ident this is because this ident is realistic and relable for the audience but other idents could be fasty or advertise the channel. Also ITV does have other idents which are realistic and relatable for the audience this shows that ITV shows programmes that are relatable and true/relastic for the audience whereas other channel's idents are not relable because the programmes they may show could be not true and therefore not relatable for the audience.

For example the music is not quick and loud the tempo in this ident is the opposite which is calm, relaxed and slow. Overall the target audience for this design feature is 20-30 year olds because this age group will appeal to slow and relaxed tempo and music.
And the design feature 'space and time' is shown in the ident because there is characters dancing is a dance studio which may be set it reality because it is presented in bright colours not in black and white and it is set in reality because the characters are dancing which is relatable for the audience this is because some viewers watching this ident may dance or enjoy dance this then makes this ident relatable for the audience. For example if the ident was presented in black and white then the audience will believe it would be set many years ago but this certain ident uses clear colours which suggests it is set in the present/reality. Therefore the target audience for this design feature is 16-25 year olds this is because this age group may enjoy this style of dance and may dance themselves.
The design feature 'entertainment vs information' is clearly shown in this ident because this ident is entertaining for the audience because their is young females dancing and the only information in this ident is the narrator proving information of what programme is appearing next. For example if the ident was just a plain background with the logo this may be not interesting for the audience because the audience would have nothing to watch. Therefore the target audience for this design feature is 16-25 this is because this age group will find this ident appealing and entertaining as they can watch the ident and feel entertained as they can watch people dance. (Many people find people dancing appeal and entertaining).

For example if the narrator speaks using sophisticated lanuage and putting a lot of detail into what they are saying then the narrator would be speaking in a formal way but in this ident the narrator does not speak long and speaks as if she is having a conversation with the audience. Overall the target audience for this design feature is 16-25 year olds this is due to the fact that this age group will want to be spoken in a calm, pleasant and relaxed manner. (Which is done and shown in this certain ident).
Successful and unsuccessful idents.
There are many opportunities of onscreen graphic representation. Idents ‘Create a corporate identity and tone for your channel’. This means what the channel is about and what is the ident trying to communicate to the audience. For example the ident may be all pink and have animals included in the ident this then suggests this certain ident is for young females. Idents also ‘Easily display text based information’. This means the ident displays/shows text which could be helpful to the audience as it may give information of the channel or the programme this is helpful to the audience as the audience may want to know what programme could be appearing next on the channel. And an ident, ‘Allows you to brand your channel’. So this means the audience trust what’s on that certain channel. For example the viewer may enjoy watching programmes on, ‘E4’ therefore that certain viewers then wants to see all programmes on that certain channel programmes they enjoy. Idents, ‘Encourage brand loyalty’ means the ident encourages. Idents also appeal to, 'Target audience’ this means what age group the target audience appeals to. For example if an ident was serious and included a lot of text information then this will appeal to an older generation because it will not be suitable for younger children. And people continue watching a certain channel because they know and trust the channel and the programmes the channel shows.
There is ‘Limitations
of onscreen graphic representation’. The
limitation of onscreen graphic representation includes, ‘Typography’ this means
the ident needs to big and bold so it can catch the attention on the viewer’s
attention more. Also ‘Resolution’ is what type of devices people are using. For
example people watch programmes on their mobile phones. ‘Colour’ is then what
devices are people watching the channel/ident on. Also ‘Aspect-ratio’ means what
the viewer is watching the channel on. For example the viewer may watch the
channel on a wide or small screen. This may affect the quality because the
footage may be stretched to much which will then make the quality appear blurry
and unclear to the audience.
The newest ident for ‘TV Gold’ from 2004 is a successful ident. Such as the newest ident contains a corporate identity and a tone for the channel this is because TV Gold displays their logo clearly and the channel’s ident clearly reflects of what the channel is about this is because TV Gold includes comedy programmes and this ident contains random and funny props. For example the audience see laughing teeth walking around the ident, which suggest that TV Gold shows a range of comedy programmes. The typography in this certain ident is appealing, big and use of bold righting and props which appeals to a range of audiences. Also this certain ident contains a range of bright colours, which attracts the audience attention. And the channel’s brand is comedy which is shown though the ident as the ident status, “Put something funny on” which then suggests that TV Gold is a funny channel and the ident is interacting with the audience as the ident is advising to put on TV Gold as it contains funny programmes. Also the ident also appeals to many target but mostly to 16-50 years olds this is due to the fact.
Whereas the ‘TV Gold’ ident from 1992 in
unsuccessful this is due to the fact it contains little interaction with the viewers which makes the audience feel uninvolved with the ident. ( As if the audience feel they are not apart of the ident/ TV Gold). Also this ident is not entertaining fort the audience so the audience feel less instrested in watching the ident which leads to the audience not wanting to watch the channel's programmes. Also the fact there is only little density of information makes the audience uninstrested in watching the ident therefore the channel's programmes. Overall this TV Gold ident from 1992 is unsucessful as it does not appeal to the audience in any way and the ident is unclear to the audience of what it is presenting.
The '4Musc: Current Idents' ident is successful this is because it has a well-balanced composition this is due to the fact the ident is well thought though and it is clear to the audience of what the ident is stating and what type of programmes the channel may produce and show. Also this ident is entertaining for the audience may find watching other people dancing interesting and entertaining. The ident is related to the channel because as soon as the music begins the male and female characters begin dancing this then suggests as soon as the 4Music begins people just want to dance. For example in an ident there be an location but the logo of the channel will be clearly seen by the audience this is so the audience know what channel they are watching and what the channel is called.
And for an succesfful ident, the ident must show use of space and time. Such as where the ident is set/locatated this is so the viewers can understand the channel more though the use of the ident. For example the Film4 idents use different genres of films which relates to Film4.
