Intro: I have recently been doing research into music videos due to the fact I will
be creating my own music video so in order for the video I plan to create it
must have all the correct conventions needed in order for the music video to be
successful.
1.) It is very common for the artist to appear in the music video this is so the video appears more professional and the artist may appear as a character or lip-synching so the artist may relate to the storyline of the music video or just to make the video appear more interesting for the audience watching.
For example in the music video, ‘Flaws' by Bastille the audience see the artist singing and acting in the music video. This is so the audience understand who created the music video to begin.
In the next music video, 'Under control' by Calvin Harris the audience clearly see the artist appear though out the music video this is so the audience is fully aware of who the singer of the video is and so the video becomes more professional appearing to the audience watching.
Also in the music video, 'uncondionally' the artist clearly appears in the music video. This is because the artist is the main character within the music video so the artist appears in the video often so the audience is aware that the singer is the artist as well as the main character within the music video.
In the next video called, 'Counting stars' the audience clearly see the artist appear in the music video. The audience also see the artist lip-synching in the music video as well as playing types of instruments in the music video.
In the music video, 'Let her go' the audience see the artist appear though out the video this is so the video appears more professional appealing to the audience watching. Also in this music video the audience see the artist playing different types of instruments this is so the video becomes more appealing to the audience watching.
2.) The music video is usually the soundtrack to the whole video this so the audience are fully interested due to the fact the audience can listen to music while watching a video which may link to the storyline of the video shown.
For example in the music video, 'Flaws' begins with a quick pace to attract the audience watching. Also the music is the sound track to the whole of the music video. This is so the audience find the video more interesting as they can watch the video while listening to the music.
In the next music video, 'Under control' the music video is the sound track to the whole video. This is because the audience will find the video more appealing if they can listen to music while watch a video at the same time.
In the next video,' Uncondially' the music video is clearly the soundtrack to the video this is clearly seen because as the video begins the music begins as well. Also in the next music video, 'Counting stars' the music video is the sound track to the whole video. This is shown as soon as the video begins the music starts, this is the video becomes more appealing to the audience watching the video.
In the next music video called, 'Let her go' the audience are clearly aware that the music is the sound track to the whole video. This is so the video becomes more interesting to the audience and so its tells a story though the use of lyrics and performing.
3.) In many music video the artist will lip-synch along with the lyrics of the music video this is so the video becomes more appealing and interesting for the audience watching.
For example in the music video, 'Flaws' shows in parts of the video the artist lip-synching along with the lyrics as well as acting. This is so the audience clearly understand that the artist is an important character within the video.
Also in the music video, 'Under control' the audience clearly see the artist lip-synching though out the video this is so the audience is aware of who song the lyrics included in the music video.
In the next music video called, 'Uncondially' the audience see the artist lip-synching though out the video this is so the video becomes more interesting and appealing for the audience watching the video as well as listening to the lyrics of the music video.
The next video called, 'Counting stars' clearly shows the artist lip-synching along with the lyrics of the video. This is so the video appears more professional to the audience watching.
And in the music video, 'Let her go' the audience clearly see the artist lip-synching though out the video this is so the video becomes more interesting to the audience watching the music video.
4.) The artist may perform though out the video to keep the artist entertain though out the video and so the audience do not lose interest within the video.
In the music video, 'Flaws' the audience see the artist acting and gesturing in the video this is so it expresses the emotions of the artist and characters more clearly in the video.
In the next music video, 'Under control' the artist performs though out the video. This is because the artist is seen acting as well as lip-synching in the music video. This is so the video becomes more professional to the audience watching.
Also in the next music video called, 'Uncondially' the audience clearly see the artist lip-synching as well as act though out this is so the video becomes more interesting for the audience watching the video.

In the next video, 'Let her go' the audience sees the artist lip-synching, playing instrument and acting this is all used so the video becomes more appealing for the audience watching the video.
5.) It is very important for the music video to have more then three or four different types of locations shown this is so the video becomes more professional and appealing for the audience watching.
For example in the music video, 'Flaws' the audience clearly see more then three different locations included in the music video. This is used so it creates more of a clear storyline for the audience to understand.
The next music video I looked at is called, 'Under control' this music video shows a range of different types of locations which then makes the music video have more of a clear storyline for the audience to understand. This then makes the video appeal more to the audience as it appears more professional and appealing to watch.
The next music video I looked at was called, 'Uncondially' this video shows clear use of a range of different types of locations. The different types of locations relates to the character's costume this is due to the fact the costume used appears upper class which relates to the location of the video which is higher class appealing to the audience. Therefore the locations used creates a clearer storyline for the audience to understand.
Also the next music video called, 'Counting stars' shows a range of different locations this is so the video appeals more to the audience watching because if more then one different location is used makes the audience understand more about the characters, the meaning behind the lyrics and the storyline of the music video.
The last music video I looked at was called, 'Let her go' this music video showed use of a range of different location this is so the video appears more professional for the audience watching and to attract a wider audience for the music video.
6.) Costumes are used in every music video this is because it may relate to the characters, the artist, the target audience or the storyline. Therefore costume is very important and it makes the storyline of the music video more clear for the audience to understand while watching the video.
In the music video, 'Flaws' the audience see the artist/main character's costume clearly though out the music video. This is so the audience understand more about the personality of the artists' character. In this music video the audience see that the artist wears youthful clothing which will then appeal to teenagers and adults. Therefore this music video is trying to appeal to teenagers and adults. This then means that the target audience for this music video is teenagers and adults.
The next music video, 'Under control' shows a range of different types of costume to show that everyone is the music video is an individual this is so the audience can relate to a different character within the video. This is because everyone in the world is a individual and will have different types of interests which is shown in this music video though the use of costume.
Also the next video, 'Uncondially' the audience clearly see the costume of the characters. The costume shown in the video suggests that the character are upper class due to the fact the costume is posh and appears expensive to the audience. Therefore the costume used relates to the storyline of the music video.
And the music video, 'Counting stars' the audience see the character's wearing causal costume. This is used so the audience can understand more about the personality of the characters and the type of costume is so the audience can relate to the character due to the fact the audience may wear causal clothing. Therefore the type of costume used is trying to attract a wider audience range.
The last music video I looked at was called, 'Let her go' this costume used in this music video shows use of causal costume this is used so the audience understand that the character are more relatable if wearing causal clothing which the audience may chose to wear.
7.) The use of a studio is common in a music video this is so the video appears more original and personal to the artist and the audience watching. Also the use of a studio may make the video appear more professional for the audience watching.
For example in the music video, 'Flaws' the audience see a clear studio. This is so the music appears more original and appealing for the audience to watch.
Also in the music video, 'Under control' there is use of a clear studio which makes the video appeal more the audience as it appears more original and different to current music videos.
The next music video, 'Uncondially' shows clear use of a studio which makes the video appeal more the audience as it shows that the artist uses their own ideas for different types of setting which relates to the storyline of the video.
The music video, 'Counting stars' shows clear use of a studio which is shown though the use of different shot types of performance shots. The studio is used in this music video to appealing more the audience and to appear more interesting which will then attract a wider audience range.
The last music video I looked at was called, 'Let her go' the audience see use of a studio as the artist is seen in a plan dark/black background. The reason this is used to focus more on the artist and performance shots in the music video.
8.) Many music video will contain some kind of narrative which may be intercut with performance shots this is so the music video becomes more interesting for the audience and so the video becomes more appealing overall.
For example in the music video, 'Flaws', as the audience watch the video they understand more about the storyline of the music video and what the video is about. The storyline is used so the video becomes more interesting to watch because if the audience watch the video to the end they will understand the meaning behind the lyrics more clearly though the use of the storyline.
In the next video, 'Under control' the audience see a clear use of a storyline this is so the audience find the video more successful if they can watch the video which links to the lyrics of the music video. Therefore the storyline is used to attract a wider audience.

And the music video, 'Counting stars' shows clear use of storyline which is shown though the use of lyrics and performance shots, (such as acting of the artist and other character in the video). Therefore the storyline is used to make the video appear more professional for the audience to watch.

9.) Many music videos will contain a range of camera movements this is used to make the video appear more dynamic and interesting for the audience watching.

Also in the next music video, 'Uncondially' the audience see fast camera movements. This is so it creates a fun and lively atmosphere for the audience watching.
And in the music video, 'Counting stars' the audience see a range of fast and slow camera movements this is so the audience clearly see parts of the video such as performance shots which can only be seen though slow camera movements which is shown in this music video.
In the next music video, 'Let her go' the audience see slow camera movements. This is so it relates to the pace and rhyme of the music. (The pace of this music is slow).
10.) Many music videos use mostly close-ups for the lip-synching, mid/long shots for performance and extreme close-ups for cutaways this is so the video shows locations, the artist and character's emotions and costume more clearly though the use of different shot types though out the music video.
For example in the music video, 'Flaws' the audience clearly sees the character's dancing, the artist lip-synching and acting in the video. This is so the music video relates to the lyrics and storyline of the video and so it appeals more the audience watching.
In the next music video, 'Under control' the audience clearly see a range of different types of shot angles. This is so the audience can clearly see the artist lip-synching as well as performance shots in the music video.
In the music video, 'Uncondially' the audience sees the artist clearly lip-synching which is shown though the use of different shot types. Also the audience sees a range of performance shots this is so the video becomes more appealing for the audience to watch.

Also in the music video, 'Let her go' the audience see clear use of close ups and long shots. This is used to capture the artist lip-synching and to capture the artist performance. Which in this case the artist plays a range of different types of instruments this is so the video becomes more interesting for the audience to watch and enjoy.
11.) Many music videos contain use of high angle shots used to create an attractive appearance and low angles to create a high status appearance.
For example in the music video, 'Flaws' the audience see a range of high and low angle shots. This is used so the audience see high shots and angles of the location of video. And the low angles shots are used to show status and power of the characters.
Also in the music video, 'Under control' the audience see low angle shots this is so it shows status of the artist and the characters in the music which then relates to the storyline of the music video.
And in the music video, 'Uncondially' the audience see both and low angles included in the video. This is used to make the video appear more professional and to make the audience watching more interest in the video.
In the next music video I looked at was called, 'Counting stars' this video shows at certain points of low angle shots this is so the audience can clearly see the artist emotions and body language which makes the storyline more clear for the audience watching.
In the next music video, 'Let her go' the audience see high angle shots of the locations and settings of the music video. And the high angle shots may also suggest that the artist has a high status.
12.) In music videos there will be a wide range of different shot types and angles in each type of location this is used to allow for dynamic and non-repetitve appearance in the editing.
For example in the music video, 'Flaws' the audience see a range of different shots types this is to make the video appear more professional for the audience watching. And so the audience enjoy watching the video more which may lead to a wider audience wishing to watch the music video.

In the music video, 'Let her go' the audience clearly see different types of shot types used. This is so the music video becomes more appealing and professional for the audience watching.
13.) The editing in the music video will cut to the beat, and will be montage editing this is used so the video becomes shorter in length and more appealing for the audience watching.
For example in the music video, 'Flaws' the audience see a range of editing though out the video. This is used because it will make the length of the video shorter which will appeal to the audience more because the audience will not wish to watch a long video and they may lose interest in the music video and music. Therefore the length of the music video must be no longer then four minutes otherwise the audience may lose interest.
The music video, 'Under control' shows editing though out the video this is so the video becomes more professional appearing. And so the audience find the video more interesting while watching the video.
Also in the music video, 'Uncondially' the audience clearly see use of editing though out the video. This is so it exaggerates the music more and makes the video becomes more appealing for the audience watching.
And in the music video, 'Counting stars' the audience see clear use of editing. This is so it cuts to the artist lip-synching and to show performance shots in the video.

14.) It is common for a slow motion effect to be used this is to create a attractive, appealing or dream effect. Therefore slow motion may be used to make the video appear more professional for the audience watching.
for example in the music video, 'Flaws' the audience see use of slow motion this is used to show emotions of characters more clearly and to show the artist acting in the music video.
In the music video, 'Under control' the audience see use of slow motion this is used to show performance skills though out the music video.

And in the music video, 'Counting stars' the audience see use of slow motion. This is used to create an dream affect.
And in the next video I looked at was called, 'Let her go' the audience see some use of slow motion this is so the audience can clearly see the performance of the artist, a range of different shot types and emotions more clearly though the use of the music video.
15.) Many music videos are based around a concept this is so the video becomes more clear for the audience watching.
For example in the music video, 'Flaws' the audience see clear use of an concept this is used so the audience can connect more with the artist in the music video.
Also in the music video, 'Under control' the audience see a concept included in the music video this is so the video becomes more appealing and interesting in the music video.

Therefore the audience connects and relates with the artist though the use of different shot types included in this music video.
17.) Eye contact is used in many videos to connect with the audience and to show the artist is aware that a camera is filling the artist. Therefore the use of eye contact is used to make the audience more interested in watching the video.
For example in the music video, 'Flaws' it clearly shows the use of eye contact this is used to show the artist is speaking/singing to the audience. This is so the audience feel more apart of the music video.

Another example of music video conventions.
Here in this music video the audience clearly see the artist appear though out the music video this is due to the fact the artist plays the main character put also sings as well in the video. This shows that this character is very important in this video has he is show in the start and the end of the video.
In the video the audience can clearly see the artist is lip-synching along with the lyrics. This is to make the music video appear more appealing and professional if acting and singing is included in the music video. And acting and singing/lip-synching is included in this music video which is shown in this clip.
The audience can see that the artist is performing throughout the video. In this video clip the audience see that the artist is acting and showing emotions though body language and facial expressions this is due to the fact that the artist/character is seen running away looking scared which relates to the storyline of the music video. Therefore the artist is performing throughout the video.
In this clip the audience clearly see more then 3 locations in this music video. This is so the music video appears more appealing and professional to the audience.
The audience clearly see the artist wearing a youthful costume throughout the video this is because it relates to the target audience of the music video which is teenagers and adults. Therefore the costume used is trying to appeal to teenagers and adults though the artist chose of clothing/costume.
In this clip the audience see a range of camera movements this is used so it creates an scary atmosphere this is due to the fact that the character is seen running away looking scared. And the camera's movements appears shackie this is so the audience feel as if they are running with the character seen in the clip running. This is used so the audience feel apart of the music video.

Examples of music video conventions.
Here is the music video called, 'Of the night' by, 'Bastille'.
Here the audience can clearly see that the music begins as soon as the music video begins. Therefore the music video is the soundtrack to the whole video, it starts and ends when the music in the video starts and ends.
Here the audience can clearly see more then 3 or 4 different locations. Also the locations change with each verse/chorus this is so the video appears more appealing, professional and interesting to the audience watching the music video.
In this clip the audience clearly see the character's costume. The costume in this music video shows status and authority. This is due to the fact the character is seen wearing a black suit which suggests the character is in a serious situation or a serious job.
This music video does contain a narrative, often intercut with performance shots. A narrative is very important in a music video so the video becomes more interesting to watch for the audience. This is due to the fact that this music video is about a FBI male worker who deals with suicides but the audience can slowly see by the use of emotions of shots that this FBI worker is slowly be affected which leads this character taking his own life which is shown at the end of the music video.
This music video does connect eith the audience this is due to the fact the audience watch the male character though out the video and saw the sad emotions of the characters and to find out that this character has committed suicide makes the audience feel sad as they connected with this character. Therefore the audience have emotionally connected with the character/s in this music video.

This video does contain use of high angles which does create an atmosphere this is due to the fact the audience see the FBI male looking down at the audience. This shows that the male has high status as he is seen looking down at the audience which shows he has power whereas the audience lack power.
This music video does connect eith the audience this is due to the fact the audience watch the male character though out the video and saw the sad emotions of the characters and to find out that this character has committed suicide makes the audience feel sad as they connected with this character. Therefore the audience have emotionally connected with the character/s in this music video.
For this music video the character is making eye contact with the audience this is because the main character is seen sitting on the chair looking at the audience. as well as expressing sad emotions which then creates a sad/depressed atmosphere. Therefore the character making eye contact suggests that this character is reaching out for help as the character is seen sitting alone which reflects on the facial expressions of the characters. Therefore eye contact is seen in this music video as it creates an atmosphere for the audience or makes the audience connect with the characters more.
