Draft-Article explaining what I do as a media researcher.

Media researcher article.

For many years I have been working alongside record companies’ albums for artists and pop groups. Recently I have been asked to write an article for the newspaper, ‘The Guardian’ this article will be about my day-to-day job. In the beginning of my career, I was a songwriter, which will then be used for artists to sing in performances such as live shows, music videos and creating music used for an album. I then went into editing music videos and editing music to be then used in an album. So to make an album for an artist or group successful. Audience, market and production research does need to be conducted when creating the product in order for it to appeal to the target audience.

The main purpose of audience research is to have an idea of the target audience by conducting a range of different types of research. This is including research such as observations. This is used to identify the target audience more easily and clearly. And to identify who would buy the album. It is very important to do this research as it makes it easier to improve the album for the audience it also allows us to target a pacific age group. A type of primary research we conducted was creating a, ‘Vox pop’. (A Vox pop is video footage of other people’s opinions while asking questions). This was all recorded in types of high streets such as Oxford Street, Sutton high street and Kingston high street due to the fact this is where Atomic kitten’s target audience frequently visit. We began this Vox pop by asking females who was around our target audience age group, which is 16-30 years of age. We began by asking a range of different questions such as, “How old are you?” and “What music do you listen to most often”? And “What is your favorite genre of music”? It was very important to ask questions, which relate to the product I will be planning to create, ‘Best of atomic kitten album’.  This is so we understand more about what appeals most to our target audience.

Also asking questions which relate to the product makes us stay up-to –date due to the fact the audience may use apps using their mobile phones and the audience may wish to listen to music though the use of an app. Therefore if we show we can use technology then the audience may find the album more appealing an interesting as it is easier to access, pay to listen to the album and quicker to use whether the person may be. We also conducted geodemographic analysis, which is about where people live and the similarities they share. Therefore we conducted this type of research in order to understand the amount of people who lived in different areas, in order to understand more about the background of the audience and understand a fair price range to sell the product, this is because if the product is priced to high then depending on where the audience live they may not be able to purchase the product. Therefore the product must be at a fair price in order to make a high profit.

Market search is a type of research that collects information about the product and how the customer felt about the product. Therefore in order to be successful the company must carry out market research in order to gain feedback about previous albums. This way, we could meet audience expectations and improve on any deficiencies of the last albums that were sold. To get the results I created a questionnaire for other people to complete. The people who took part in the questionnaire were females aged 16-30 years of age. We mainly aimed for people who were working in a type of employment. This is due to the fact we want people to be able to buy the product so we aimed at people who were working to get an idea the amount of people who are able to purchase the final product.

Also it was important to create a questionnaire aimed for a females aged 16-30, due to the fact we would be able to understand more about our target audience by asking questions that relate to the product we plan to create this is so when we create the, ‘Atomic kitten album’ is successful and appeals to the target audience which is females aged 16-30 years of age. The primary research conducted helped us have a better understanding of what type of audience listens to. We also wanted the research to help us compare other current pop albums compared to Atomic kitten. So the type of questions we asked in the questionnaire was, “What do you personally think of other music albums compared to Atomic kitten”? It is very important to ask pacific questions in order to receive a clear answer. Advertising is very important using different sources and techniques as it is a successful and professional way for a product to be seen by the audience and so the audience can understand more about the product. So we began by watching current albums advertising by watching how the product is presented in the advisement and how the target audience comes across in the advert.

Advertising can be shown though the use of posters, banners, television advertisement and Internet advertisement.  So when trying to collect information from data sources I used a website called www.barb.com. This is a website collects information of viewing figures of types of channels which the audience has watched. I then began my secondary research because I was able to plan where I wished to broadcast and advertise the Atomic kitten album because the research I conducted by using the website www.barb.com made me able to understand what channel to advise my product on.  For example 4Music would be a suitable channel to broadcast the advertise of my product. Due to the fact that this pacific channel has a similar target audience I have based my product around. Therefore the audience watching the channel may be interested in purchasing the product, as it will appeal to their interest because 4Music plays music and the product I plan to sell is an album, which plays music for the audience to listen to.  Therefore doing this quantitative research then made me able to discover the circulation figured which are compared to other current albums.  I was then able to collect and find information from different types of music websites. Such as YouTube this website supplies the audience to listen to music do when they wish to do so. Therefore we were able to see the figures of people who had listed to types of music and albums. This then made it able for us to keep track of other potation competitors and make us fully aware of the amount of people who had viewed songs and albums. And what type of music genre the audience enjoy listening to.

Production research means searching into how to create a product. I carried out production research very often with myself and my team due to the fact that the album we plan to create appears up to date and appeals to our target audience. We then began researching different types of record label that would be able to sell and publish the album we plan to create. We researched though the use of the Internet in order to have a range of sources that may be suitable to publish our album. We then went onto considering the budget of the product this is so we understand how much money is going to be spent in creating the product and publishing the album. We then went onto discussing on different locations which will be used for the photos of the album, photos are important as it makes the album appear more appealing and professional for the audience. We then found out in order to take professional and appealing photos we would require a professional photographer, so we began interviews for a photographer in order for the photos used on the album appear professional for the audience.

Therefore the job of creating an album is very important for a record label company because in order to be successful we must be aware the audience's personal opinion and how they feel towards the product. Therefore if we are more aware of how the audience feels towards the product it gives us a chance to improve the product if impossible in order for the product to make more of a higher profit and appeal to the audience more. We then moved onto how we were going to create the product and what is needed for the product to appeal to the target audience. (The target audience for this product is females aged 16-30 years of age). We then discussed record labels, which are successful and popular in order for the audience to understand more about the product and what it is about. And by using a popular and successful record label may lead to the product creating more of a higher profit as it popular with the audiences who have purchased pervious products from the company of the record label.
